It’s the big comeback of pyjamas! This long pajama set is a nod to traditional pyjamas with a more contemporary twist, its Nelumbo print and neat finishing touches. It is superbly cut with its long sleeves with buttoned cuffs, its pockets and its piped hem. It’s comfortable with a slightly elasticated waistband and drawstring.
100% cotton woven from fine, long fibers for exceptional softness and flexibility.
A little history…
The Nelumbo is an aquatic plant of the family Nelumbonaceae and its name refers to the Sacred Lotus or Indian Lotus. A reference to India that seemed obvious to us for this first print since the word “pajama” comes from the Hindi word “Pajama” meaning “dressing the legs”. If the garment is inspired by the soft and wide pants worn in colonial India, it was first worn by men of the wealthy classes in place of their long laced and buttoned nightgowns in the last quarter of the 19th century. At a time when clothing reflected a clear distinction between the roles of the two sexes in society, it was not until the mid-1920s that women wore a type of pyjamas…
This shift from male to female wardrobe can also be seen in the cinema, notably in the 1934 film New York Miami where Claudette Colbert borrows Clark Gable’s pyjamas.
