It’s the big comeback of pyjamas! This long pyjama set is a nod to traditional pyjamas with a more contemporary touch, its timeless but revisited toile de Jouy print and its careful finishing. Super well cut with its long sleeves with buttoned cuffs, pockets and piped hem. It is comfortable with its slightly elasticated waist and its drawstring.
100% cotton woven from fine, long fibers for exceptional softness and flexibility.
A little history…
The toile de Jouy is a cotton fabric called Indian, an Indian being a cotton fabric painted or printed, originally made in India, then copied by European manufacturers on which are represented characters with decorations or landscapes. A reference to India that seemed obvious to us for this first print since the word “pajama” comes from the Hindi word “Pajama” meaning “dressing the legs”. If the garment is inspired by the soft and wide pants worn in colonial India, it was first worn by men of the wealthy classes in place of their long laced and buttoned nightgowns in the last quarter of the 19th century. At a time when clothing reflects a clear distinction between the roles of the two sexes in society, it was not until the mid-1920s that women wore a type of pyjamas …
This transition from male to female wardrobe is also seen in the movies, including the 1934 film New York Miami where Claudette Colbert borrows the pyjamas of Clark Gable.
